How To Apply
Read here what IMSA students have to say on what it takes to get into the Academy.
Application deadline for the 2008-2009 academic year has now passed. Applications for the 2009-2010 academic year will be available online, and for download in September.
- Applying via paper application consists of these simple steps:
- Request an application from a school counselor or contact the Office of Admissions directly (call (630) 907-5028 or (800) 500-IMSA). Schools are not asked to pre-screen students for eligibility.
- Complete the application form and submit it along with at non-refundable application fee of $50.00 to IMSA, postmarked by March 1, 2009. Applications for the 2009-2010 academic year will become available in the fall.
- Ask a mathematics teacher, a science teacher, and an English teacher to complete and return the evaluation form contained in the application packet postmarked by March 1. These teachers should have taught the student in either the current school year or the previous year. You may also self-select an optional recommendation.
- Ask a school counselor or principal to complete and return the appropriate evaluation form contained in the application packet postmarked by March 1. This person should be working with the student during the current school year.
- Arrange for official copies of grade transcripts to be sent to IMSA postmarked by March 1. Transcripts from 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 1st semester of 2008-2009 are needed. There is no minimum GPA required for application.
- Register and take the SAT during the current school year prior to March. Information for registering for the test is contained on our website. There is no minimum SAT score required for application.
- A file audit letter indicating what materials have been received, or not received, will be sent to applicants mid-March. Applicants may also create an online account to verify this information.
- Invitations for admission will be mailed in mid-May. Students who are offered admission for the 2009-2010 academic year will be required to complete a series of placement exams in June. Some students may be invited contingent upon successful completion of special services. Conditional status, if appropriate, will be explained with notification of the decision in May.
- The number of students invited to attend IMSA each year is determined by availability of space. An additional group of students are identified for a waitlist. Invitations are extended to students on the waitlist as spaces open. The trend has been that approximately half of the students on the waitlist ultimately are invited to attend.
