At Home
All students attending the Academy live on campus. Our alumni often cite the strong sense of community that our residential setting fosters. Our Residence Halls are modern, comfortable, and safe places for students to live, work, and play! Twenty-four IMSA students and their Residential Counselor (RC) live in each of the four wings that make up a Residence Hall, and our Security staff ensures our students' safety 24/7.
Student Rooms
By decorating, arranging furniture (IMSA provides each student with a wardrobe, bed, desk and chair, and mini-dresser) and adding their personal touches, roommate pairs make IMSA their home away from home! Each room has its own bathroom, heat and air controls, and tons of windows. Space to spare allows students to relax and hang out with friends.
Hall Wing
From wing home-cooked spaghetti dinners, hall dances, late night discussion groups, journal writing, or even beauty nights
on campus to trips to the area skating rink, malls, ice cream parlor, pizza place or movie theatre, IMSA students enjoy many of the same activities they did at home. RCs and their student assistants, called Community Developers, work to bring student wings together, organize original programs and pitch in with hall spirit. Every wing has a kitchenette and TV lounge for convenience and special events.
Around Campus
Since its opening in 1986, IMSA's campus has developed into a verdant, activity-filled place. Our open quad (known as Yare Yard
) where students join in pick up games of football or Frisbee, our research pond, sand volleyball courts, and outdoor art collection, show that our 93-acre campus is unique.
Staying Well
IMSA is about both mind and body, as our active, well-equipped fitness center and health office demonstrate. Our fitness center, which students can use during both our Wellness Department's classes and their free time, contains ample machine and free weight equipment -- and a rockin' sound system! IMSA's health office, staffed by Rush-Copley Medical Center nurses, is open weekdays from 7am to 3:30pm and a doctor is on call 24 hours a day.
Athletics
There is life at IMSA beyond mathematics and science. IMSA competes with other area high schools through IHSA in 18 interscholastic sports. And more than 2/3 of IMSA students participate in one sport of more. Our dance squad, tennis and swim teams have won numerous individual and team awards. IMSA is a Class AA school for its IHSA sanctioned athletics except boys' and girls' soccer, for which we're Class A.
Never a Dull Moment
IMSA students can always fill their social calendars. From musical theater by Sound F/X, to the challenges of fencing, to debates between Teenage Republicans and Young Democrats, there is never an excuse to be bored. Students can always find their own fun, and through our Student Council, charter new clubs each year.
Pool/Gym
Students and their families pile into our gym to join in IMSA Titan School Spirit at our basketball games, complete with pep band, cheerleaders, dance squad, and concessions stand. Intramural sports have always been popular at IMSA. Our badminton club has over 30 members; water polo, basketball and soccer are also favorites of IMSA students.
IMSA's pool features a 30-meter tank with a movable bulkhead that splits the pool into a six-lane 25-yard competition course and a separate diving well. IMSA's Aquatics programs include Varsity and Junior Varsity teams in Boys' and Girls' Swimming and Diving, recreational swimming time for students and staff, and a fast-growing co-ed Water Polo club.
Join Us!
Through our programs on campus, at locations throughout Illinois and online, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy has enabled students and teachers to discover the wondrous and powerful influence of mathematics, science and technology in the world around us.
Like the IMSA grads who came before them, these young men and women are preparing to become the scientific and technical leaders who will keep Illinois and our nation prosperous. They are taught to use their talents and skills to create a compassionate and sustainable world for all. Here are the future leaders who will publish groundbreaking research, find cures for cancer, file patents, start new companies, bring new technologies to market and create high-tech jobs.
Their journey at IMSA prepares them for greatness.
IMSA's offices of Admissions and Advancement thank students Jessica Liu ('06) and Sarah Curry ('04) for contributing photos to this Virtual Tour.
