Student Inquiry and Research Program Details
Investigation Citation Format for SIR Bibliography
Introduction
The preliminary bibliography, submitted with the Investigation Proposal, should list at least five citations with at least two from the primary literature. The final bibliography, submitted with the Investigation Final Report, should include all resources that you used to assist with ideas and information needed for your work.
General encyclopedias are not to be considered as a citation. These may be good sources of general background material and should certainly be used as a personal resource. Reference works and encyclopedias specific to a discipline may be used provided your advisor approves of them.
For more information on primary versus secondary versus tertiary scientific literature, please refer to the Excerpt from the IMSA Research and Information Skills Guide prepared by Dr. Don Dosch, Mr. Chris Jocius, Dr. Susan Styer, and Mr. Joe Traina. For more information on primary versus secondary versus tertiary literature in other areas, see "The Literature Guide for Humanities, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences."
