Outcomes of Student Inquiry and Research

"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."

- Thomas A. Edison

Additional Opportunities

One general outcome of conducting a SIR investigation is that it opens doors for many optional opportunities to leverage Student Inquiry and Research project results and experiences within the broader educational and scientific communities. Possibilities for sharing student results include submission to professionals in appropriate fields for review and feedback, presentations at conferences and competitions, scrutiny in relevant competitions, financial rewards and opportunities for further study or travel.

Some external opportunities are appropriate for work already conducted through the Student Inquiry and Research program. Some opportunities may build upon existing SIR projects but require additional work that specifically targets a competition theme and may include writing an essay, proposing research or designing a web site or invention.

Only official program sponsors will have up-to-date information and requirements about specific opportunities. Information on any particular opportunity should be carefully checked through official sponsor channels.

A sampling of additional opportunities is provided here to give a sense of the possibilities available to the interested student who wishes pursue them further:

Investigate the opportunity early with the official source for specific deadlines, details, and requirements. Some sponsoring agencies will support, and even require, entry of collaborative work and others will not; some opportunities have age or grade restrictions, and so forth.

Should you decide to pursue a particular opportunity, you must start preparing your submission well before the official deadline. Seek out your advisor and other knowledgeable individuals to help you further prepare and polish your work for external audiences.
