Sample Investigation
Music Composition: What goes into the Making of a Song?
The work of student-composer Minji Ro, the focus of this Fine Arts Student Inquiry and Research project was music composition and production with the aid of computers, synthesizers, and keyboards. Her advisor for this investigation was IMSA staff member Dr.
Christopher F. Kuhl.
The equipment used for this investigation is located in the Grainger Center for Imagination and Inquiry.
Minji experimented with music automation by adding specific instruments and varying the tempo and sub-melodies to one musical theme. Her investigaton is further described in the abstract: MUSIC COMPOSITION: WHAT GOES INTO THE MAKING OF A SONG? (2002).
For some sense of the influence of automation on the fullness of her composition, listen to a musical sample, one of three that Minji produced during the project.
