IMSA Students Qualify to Take USA Math Olympiad

AURORA-- Four students from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) are among the 170 nationally who have qualified to take the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO). IMSA had the second highest number of qualifying students in the nation.

IMSA qualifiers are Kevin Costello of St. Charles, Jeffrey Fonck of Marseilles, Terry Koo of Naperville and Nick Rupprecht of Gurnee.

Students qualify to take the USAMO based on their previous scores on the American High School Math Exam and the American Invitational Math Exam. High scorers on the USAMO, to be held April 27, will be invited to train for the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, June 9-July 8, 1999.

1994 IMSA graduate Stephen Wang was one of only six students to make the USA Mathematical Olympiad team which took first place and received a perfect team score in international competition in 1994. This year, the U.S. team will compete internationally in Romania July 10-22, 1999. Former IMSA Mathematics Teacher Titu Andreescu serves as head coach of the U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad Team.
