IMSA Seeking Student Applicants for Summer Program

AURORA—The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is now seeking applicants for its summer 2001 programs. IMSA offers summer day programs in science, technology and the arts for Fox Valley area students in grades 3-9. Registration is now open for the following summer programs:
- Science Explorers, Jr. (July 30-August 3)- for students entering grades 3-4. During this program, created and taught by IMSA students, participants will explore different science topics each day through hands-on discovery, computer work and group sharing.
- Science Explorers at IMSA (June 18-22)- for students entering grades 5-6. During this program, students will try to solve a simulated crime case by gathering and testing evidence, interviewing witnesses and preparing a case that will end in a final group presentation.
- Science Explorers in Chicago at Walter Payton High School (June 25-29)- for students entering grades 5-6. Students will spend this problem-centered week exploring the possibility of the future colonization of Mars.
- Science Explorers in Liberty at Liberty High School (July 9-13)- for students entering grades 4-6. Students will spend this problem-centered week exploring the possibility of the future colonization of Mars.
- Explorations in Science (June 18-22)- for students entering grades 7-8. Students will be involved with laboratory activities, investigate scientific questions and be involved in group sharing. Students will look at the world through the eyes of a scientist.
- Summer Sleuths (June 25-28 and July 16-19)- for students entering grades 7-9. Students will explore a real-world problem using science activities, social science activities and Internet tools, led by teachers who are members of the Problem-Based Learning Network@imsa. Students will present their solutions to a panel of experts.
- Digital Art (July 30-August 3)- for students entering grades 7-9. Students will work on computers to learn how to take digital photographs and videos and turn them into files which can become part of a web site or other portfolio. Students will develop their own project with guidance from the instructor and IMSA students.
- German Explorers (July 30-August 3)- for students entering grades 7-9. Students will learn the basics of the German language during hands-on activities that include playing games, singing, dancing, hiking and cooking. Students will be taught by a national award-winning IMSA teacher and will have access to IMSA’s foreign language laboratory with the opportunity to create their own German web page. The culminating event will be a student-produced talent show.
