AURORA -- Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) mathematics teacher and Aurora resident Dr. Micah Fogel recently received the Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). He is one of only 24 high school teachers in the U.S. and Canada to receive the award.

The Edyth May Sliffe Award is designed to recognize and reward outstanding teachers for their efforts in the development of mathematical talents of high school students. Nominations for the award were made by students from the 60 highest scoring American Mathematics Contest 12 (AMC12) teams in the United States, Canada and American schools abroad. IMSA students who nominated Dr. Fogel were Daniel Gulotta of Naperville, Nicholas Rupprecht of Gurnee, Yun Ji of Hoffman Estates, Zhihao Liu of Lisle and Yuan Gong of Chicago.

“I am fortunate to work at IMSA where students really love and appreciate mathematics,” Fogel said. “Knowing that you had a positive influence on and made a difference in a student's life is the real award.”

Dr. Fogel began teaching at IMSA in 1994. In addition to coaching students in a number of statewide and national competitions, he teaches a wide variety of high level mathematics courses at IMSA including Number Theory, Multivariable Calculus, Algebraic Structures and BC Calculus. He currently serves on the national editorial panel for Student Math Notes, the American Mathematics Contest (AMC) advisory panel as well as participating in many other state and local professional activities.

Located in Aurora, IMSA is a learning enterprise that builds the capacity of students, teachers and policymakers to improve and transform mathematics and science teaching and learning. IMSA's residential educational program serves Illinois students (grades 10-12) talented in mathematics and science; its professional development Center serves schools, educational systems, teachers and students in Illinois and beyond.
