Illinois State Representative Linda Chapa LaVia (Aurora) recently attended the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy®’s Problem-Based Learning Summer Sleuths Program for Chicagoland students entering grades 6-9 in the fall 2003.

In June, Representative Chapa LaVia issued an appeal to the Summer Sleuths team of students. In her appeal, she asked the sleuths how the State of Illinois could address the growing problem of electronic equipment waste disposal and the hazardous materials within them.

During the 2003 IMSA Summer Sleuths Program held July 28-31, 46 student from throughout Chicagoland worked in teams to search for solutions to the problem of electronic waste. During this process, they gathered information from experts, experiments, the Internet and other resources in their quest for solutions. Summer Sleuths is an annual program where student participants seek solutions to real-world problems while integrating concepts from mathematics, science, social studies and language arts.
