World-Renowned Scholar Appointed To IMSA Board of Trustees

WORLD-RENOWNED SCHOLAR APPOINTED TO IMSA BOARD OF TRUSTEES 
AURORA – World-renowned scholar Dr. Stanley Fish, dean of the College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago
(UIC), was recently appointed to the Illinois Mathematics and Science
Academy (IMSA) Board of Trustees.
In addition to serving as dean, he also serves as Distinguished Professor of English, Criminal Justice and Political Science at UIC. Dr. Stanley Fish received his M. A. and his Ph.D. from Yale University.
“I am honored to be a member of the IMSA Board of Trustees, a group that is very dedicated and committed to its work,” Dr. Fish said. “I hope to contribute to IMSA in a variety of ways based on my previous experience, such as examining the humanities and social science program and the teaching of writing at IMSA,” Fish added. “In addition, I would like to begin to explore ways that IMSA and universities can produce quality mathematics and science teachers for the public school system.”
Dr. Fish has held academic leadership positions at distinguished colleges and universities nationwide, including Duke University and Johns Hopkins University. At Duke, Dr. Fish served as Associate Vice Provost, executive director of the Duke University Press, Arts and Sciences Professor of English and Professor of Law, and chairman of the Department of English. At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Fish served as chairman of the Department of English and the William Kenan, Jr. Professor of English and Humanities.
A world-renowned scholar on the poet John Milton, Dr. Fish has authored hundreds of articles, books and review articles, many of which have been translated into French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and Hebrew. A special library has been created with books from Dr. Fish’s collection at the School of Criticism and Theory at Cornell University.
Dr. Fish has also won numerous awards and honors, including the
Hanford Book Award, the PEN/Spielvogel-Diamonstein Award, the Milton
Society Award and a nomination for the National Book Award. Dr. Fish
also was recently named the Chicagoan of the Year: Culture in 2003 by
the Chicago Tribune.
