IMSA HOSTS PROGRAM FOR UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS

AURORA – The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) is now seeking applicants for its summer residential enrichment program for underrepresented minority students in the Chicagoland area. The Summer Enrichment for Academics in Mathematics and Science (SEAMS) program is open to underrepresented minority students entering ninth grade in the fall. The application process is competitive for the tuition-free program.

SEAMS, sponsored by a grant through the Motorola Corporation and Lucent Technologies, is a two-week, academic/residential program that engages students in the areas of mathematics, science and English. In recent SEAMS programs, students learned exciting ways to apply mathematics and scientific principles by making slimy polymers, silly putty, rockets, CO2 powered race cars, catapults, and hot air balloons.

SEAMS students also enjoy team-building activities such as off-campus trips to the local water park, bowling alley, outdoor fun park and arcade and minor league baseball park. Other campus activities also encourage leadership development through goal setting, planning and time management.

The program runs from June 20 through July 2, 2004 at IMSA. The application deadline is May 15, 2004. For a SEAMS application and further information, contact the IMSA Office of Admissions at 630-907-5027. You may download the application at http://www2.imsa.edu/admissions/gettoknow/multiculturalPrograms.php. The program is free to enrolled students.

Parents are responsible for the cost of transportation to and from IMSA during the weekend; SEAMS classes are in session Monday-Friday.
