AURORA—The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) is now seeking applicants for its summer residential enrichment program for underrepresented minority students. The Summer Enrichment for Academics in Mathematics and Science (SEAMS) program is open to underrepresented minority students entering ninth grade in the fall.
SEAMS classes are held Monday–Friday from June 18 through June 30, 2006 at IMSA. The application process is competitive for the tuition-free program and the application deadline is May 5, 2006. For application and program information contact the IMSA Office of Admissions at 630-907-5028 or (800) 500-IMSA, or via e-mail at diversity@imsa.edu. The application also can be downloaded from the IMSA Multicultural page.
SEAMS engages students in the areas of mathematics, science and English. In recent SEAMS programs, students learned exciting ways to apply mathematics and scientific principles by making slimy polymers, silly putty, rockets, CO2 powered race cars, catapults and hot air balloons.
SEAMS students also enjoy team-building activities such as off-campus trips to the local water park, bowling alley and minor league baseball park. Campus activities also encourage leadership development through goal setting, planning and time management.
Students will be required to go home Friday afternoon June 23 through Sunday evening June 25. Parents are responsible for the cost of transportation to and from IMSA, although limited assistance may be available.
The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry. (www.imsa.edu)
