IMSA GREAT MINDS PROGRAM® EXAMINES “LEARNING AND THE BRAIN”
AURORA – Dr. Marvin Minsky, founder of MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, is just one of seven notable experts who will serve as guest panelists during the daylong event Learning and the Brain: Where Are We and Where Do We Need to Be? to be held at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® on Saturday, October 20, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. There is a $10.00 fee for guests who choose the optional lunch and reception. During the event, which will feature experts from the fields of brain research and learning, panelists will discuss how the findings of neuroscientists, cognitive psychologists and computer scientists can help to advance the practice of education and learning. The event is being hosted by IMSA Resident Scholar and Nobel Laureate
Dr. Leon Lederman and will feature the following expert panelists:
-Kalina Christoff, Dept. of Psychology, P.I. Cognitive Neuroscience of Thought Lab, Neural and Cognitive Mechanisms of Human Thought, University of British Columbia;
-Kurt Fischer, Director of the Mind, Brain and Education Program, Harvard Graduate School of Medicine;
-Paul Grobstein, Professor of Biology, Director, Center for Science in Society, Co-founder of Serendip, Experimental Neurobiologist, Bryn Mawr College;
-Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Rossier School of Education, University of Southern California;
-Stephanie Pace Marshall, Founding President and President Emerita, IMSA, and author of The Power to Transform: Leadership that Brings Learning and Schooling to Life;
-Marvin Minsky, Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Sciences, MIT, and author of The Society of Mind and The Emotion Machine, Book Draft (2007) and
-Uri Wilensky, Professor of Learning Science and Computer Science, Director of the Center for Connected Learning and Computer-based Modeling, Northwestern University.
The lecture is part of the Great Minds Program® which provides opportunities for Illinois educators, students and the general public to learn from and interact with ‘great minds’ of our times including Nobel Laureates and other thought leaders in mathematics, science, the arts and humanities.
