| TITLE: | Generating the Horizon: Technology's Role in the Future of Learning |
This unique event brings together today's extraordinary leaders to share their research, experience and perspectives on learning and the multiple roles of technology. Administrators, board members, parents, teachers, school district teams and community members are invited to envision what's next on their horizon as our experts share stories and examples of emerging technologies and dynamic learning environments.
A keynote address by Dr. Alan Kay, President of Viewpoints Research Institute, Inc. and Senior Fellow at Hewlett Packard Labs, will launch the morning's events. Dr. Kay is one of the founders of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center where he contributed to the development of the modern workstation, Desktop Publishing, the Ethernet, Laser Printing and network "client-servers." He also participated in the original design of the ARPANet, which later became the Internet. He served as Chief Scientist at Atari, a Fellow of Apple Computer and Vice President of Research and Development at the Walt Disney Company. His deep interests in children and education serve as the inspirations for his ideas, which have won numerous awards.
Two 60 minute concurrent sessions will follow the keynote address. Among the featured speakers are:
Ms. Cheryl Lemke is the President and CEO of the Metiri Group, a consulting firm dedicated to advancing effective uses of technology in schools. Lemke is the former Executive Director of the Milken Exchange on Education Technology and former Associate Superintendent for the Illinois State Board of Education.
Dr. David Thornburg is the founder and Director of Global Operations for the Thornburg Center and Senior Fellow of the Congressional Institute for the Future. His latest book, Campfires in Cyberspace, explores the World Wide Web as a tool for learning. Dr. Thornburg was recently commissioned to write a position paper for the U.S. Dept. of Education on the future of technology for K-12 education.
Dr. Robert Tinker is President of the Concord Consortium where he concentrates on educational applications of portable computers, online courses for teachers and students, simulations and the development of technology-rich materials. Dr. Tinker is a co-principal investigator for the Center for Innovative Learning Technologies and serves on the Committee on Technological Literacy.
David Warlick is the principal consultant of The Landmark Project, a professional development, web design and innovations firm. He built the nation's first state department of education web site at the North Carolina State Dept. of Public Instruction. He created and maintains the Global Grocery List and is the author of Raw Materials for the Mind and Redefining Literacy for the 21st Century.
Ms. Bonnie Bracey is an Educational Technology and Reform Consultant working on national and international technology integration projects. She serves on numerous advisory boards including the George Lucas Educational Foundation, ISTE, The National Urban League, the President's National Information Infrastructure Advisory Council and the White House Technology Initiative-Cyber Ed.
