Flying Coin

But where’s the fun in Bernoulli’s law unless you can use it to cheat your friends?

What you need:

  • A dime or other small coin
  • Short bowl or dish
  • Some friends

What you do:

  1. Lay the dime about three inches from the edge of a table, and put the dish or plate six to seven inches beyond that.
  2. Now bet all of your friends that they can’t blow the dime into the dish but you can.
  3. When they fail, lean over very close to the edge of the table so that your mouth is one inch higher than the coin and blow once straight horizontally over the coin.

What's going on?

By attempting to blow underneath the coin, the pressure is lowered underneath it and the coin will not rise. However, by blowing directly across and over the coin, the pressure above the coin will be lowered instead, and the coin will rise and fly into the dish. (You may wish to practice this a few times to improve your accuracy before showing it to your friends.)
