Dr. Gretchen Green of IMSA’s Class of 1992 kicked off IMSA’s school year with a heartwarming keynote speech at the annual Convocation event, tying her IMSA experience to the charity bike trip she took across America while she was a student at the Academy. Dr. Green, a physician leader and Board Member of the National Women’s History Museum, encouraged students to be curious and bold in their endeavors, and to persevere through challenges they’ll face at the Academy.
State Senator Linda Holmes, a longtime supporter of IMSA, was among the audience of students, staff, faculty, and distinguished guests present for the ceremony. “I call IMSA a ‘jewel’ in Illinois, a hidden gem,” remarked the state senator from the 42nd District. “It's always inspirational to see a new group of students coming here to IMSA.”
President Dr. José M. Torres and Principal Dr. Marie Dahleh spoke at the assembly, as did Student Council President Heidi Dong and Executive Director of Student Affairs Dr. Robert Hernandez. Jennifer Crawford, a Class of 2012 graduate who has already been published for her organometallic chemistry research at St. Olaf College, played the featured musical piece on clarinet.
The ceremony closed with Dr. Marie Dahleh encouraging the Classes of 2016, 2017, and 2018 to “fly together,” supporting each other throughout the upcoming school year.
