Takeisha Rheams - Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy

Takeisha Rheams

Biography

I am a true suburban child. I grew up in Melrose Park, IL, but graduated from high school in Joliet, IL. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Psychology with a minor in African American Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I earned my Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology: Counseling Specialization with a Child and Adolescent Concentration from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

I’ve worked in many educational settings. I’ve worked at an alternative school, therapeutic day school, Chicago Public Schools and a private college before coming to IMSA in 2019. While at those schools, I assisted adolescents with overcoming their stressors around family, academics, and relationships. This experience has helped to cultivate a passion for working with young people and to help guide them through these challenges. I truly enjoy working in educational settings because l know this is where students spend most of their time, and l can support and advocate for them more because I’m part of the school’s culture.

As a counselor, my therapeutic style is a mixture of Client-Centered and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Utilizing these methods I will give students a hands-on way of tackling their problems. I strongly believe in providing a safe space where students can speak openly and be assured that they are not being judged but instead heard. My therapeutic approach is sincere, compassionate and down to earth. My role is to help students navigate through the process of improving the quality of their life and to help them acknowledge their strengths and achieve positive change in their lives.
