Where Curiosity Lives: A Campaign to Reinvent Residence Life

The “Where Curiosity Lives” campaign aims to raise $15 million to support the reinvention of residence life at IMSA.

For forty years, IMSA has changed lives. It began with one bold idea: that Illinois could create a place where talented young people from every corner of the state would live together, learn together, challenge one another, and ultimately change the world.

Since those first 210 students arrived on campus on September 7, 1986, that idea has become one of Illinois’ greatest educational success stories.

For forty years, IMSA’s residential community has been at the heart of what makes this Academy extraordinary.

Students don’t simply attend IMSA; they live here.

Our residence halls have never been just buildings. They are where curiosity becomes confidence, collaboration becomes innovation, belonging becomes purpose, and young people begin discovering the leaders they are meant to become.

Today, that extraordinary experience stands at an important crossroads.

Why Now?

A 2023 facilities assessment confirmed that IMSA’s seven residence halls must be replaced by 2033. The decision to replace these buildings is not a choice. It is necessary for IMSA to maintain its identity as a residential academy.

This presents a unique, once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine residence life; to build up our community, to foster curiosity, connection, and care, and to meet the evolving needs of our students in creative new ways. A philanthropic campaign is essential to achieve this vision.

How Do We Plan to Reinvent Residence Life?

While the State of Illinois has generously provided an historic investment of $125 million to build new residential halls, our philanthropic campaign will fund the construction of a new student center focused on connection, curiosity, and care. The academy has been piloting programs to bring this building to life.

Over the past four decades, we have learned that student success depends on more than exceptional academics. Students thrive when they feel cared for, connected to one another, supported in their well-being, and part of a community where they truly belong.
