Hey there! I’m Dr. J, one of the school counselors here at IMSA! I’m a strengths-based clinician with experience in higher education, outpatient therapy, and psychiatric care. I believe the counseling space should be a place where people can show up as their authentic selves to celebrate life’s wins, work through challenges, and everything in between. Mental health care often happens in the small moments and doesn’t have to wait for the “big moments.” There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health, and I don’t make assumptions about the people I work with. Instead, I take the time to learn from each person about their unique experiences and circumstances so we can work together to effectively navigate challenges. My professional practice and academic research have focused on supporting minorities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and students navigating transitions and adjustments within academic environments. I believe every person I meet brings unique strengths that can be built upon, building resilience. I often work with teens around concerns such as anxiety, depression, identity, adjustment, and cultural considerations related to mental health. My goal is to create a supportive, affirming space where students feel seen, understood, and empowered to navigate whatever they may be experiencing.Education:
