Thanks to a generous gift from Sunny and Hye Ja (Kim) Namkung, IMSA honors the life of an alum whose passion for learning will continue to inspire future generations.
On October 30, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy celebrated the dedication of the newly named Julie Y. Namkung Auditorium, honoring the memory of a remarkable student whose love of learning embodied the spirit of IMSA.
The dedication, held in conjunction with IMSA’s Fall Band/Orchestra Concert, was made possible through the generosity of Julie’s parents, Sunny and Hye Ja Namkung, who sought to create a lasting tribute to their daughter’s life and legacy.
Julie’s faith and commitment to learning were evident from an early age. In 1984 Julie was baptized alongside her father, Sunny, at Lombard Gospel Church, marking a meaningful moment in their family’s spiritual journey. Her determination to pursue education was equally remarkable. Eager to attend IMSA, Julie accelerated her academic journey, skipping her freshman year at her local high school to enroll at the Academy directly after attending Herrick Middle School in Downers Grove. At IMSA, Julie excelled academically while embracing opportunities beyond the classroom, including participation in tennis and orchestra.
After graduating from IMSA in 1991, Julie continued her academic pursuits at Northwestern University, entering its prestigious Honors Program in Medical Education. The accelerated seven-year program offered a direct path toward her lifelong dream of becoming a physician. Julie planned to begin medical school in the fall of 1994 on a Navy scholarship, continuing a journey defined by her dedication to learning and service. Although Julie passed away before she could fulfill that dream, Northwestern University awarded Julie her Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry posthumously in recognition of her academic accomplishments.
For Sunny and Hye Ja Namkung, naming the auditorium in Julie’s memory offers a meaningful way to celebrate her life while inspiring future generations of IMSA students. The auditorium, a central place for performances, celebrations, and other community events, is especially fitting given Julie’s own involvement in orchestra during her time at the Academy.
The Namkung family’s generosity also extends beyond the auditorium naming. Their philanthropic commitment supports IMSA’s Where Curiosity Lives Campaign, helping reimagine residential life and create spaces that foster student connection, care, and curiosity. Their gift also includes support for a music scholarship endowment, further extending Julie’s legacy through opportunities for future students.
IMSA extends its deepest gratitude to Sunny and Hye Ja Namkung for their extraordinary generosity and commitment to preserving Julie’s memory. Through this tribute, Julie’s spirit of curiosity and love of learning will remain a part of the IMSA community for generations to come.
