Biography

Dr. Lee W. Eysturlid is a history instructor at Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois. He has also serves as an adjunct for Northwestern University’s School of Continuing Studies program. Dr. Eysturlid earned his Ph.D. in history from Purdue University, where he specialized in Intellectual Military History and the Habsburg and Ottoman empires. He is a member of the Citadel Historical Association and is an ABC-CLIO History Fellow. His published works include Philosophers of War: The Evolution of History’s Greatest Military Thinkers (Praeger, 2013) and The Formative Influences, Theories, and Campaigns of the Archduke Carl of Austria (Praeger, 2000). Dr. Eysturlid currently conducts classes in Conflict in World History, Political Theory, Modern Conflict, and World in the 20th Century and directs independent student reading courses. The independent research topics Dr. Eysturlid has supervised include ethics, contemporary political theory, and a large number of topics in Military History. In addition to his current courses and independent research, Dr. Eysturlid has taught elective courses in the Second World War, the Cold War, War and the Modern State, American Military History, and Human Geography, and survey courses in World and Western Civilizations. He ran a year-long school-wide academic program on normative ethics for a decade.

Dr. Eysturlid serves as an advisory board member for the following ABC-CLIO high school level websites: World History: Ancient and Medieval Eras, World History: Modern, World at War, Modern Genocide: Understanding Causes and Consequences; and the following collegiate level websites: World History: Ancient and Medieval Eras, World History: Modern, World at War and Modern Genocide: Understanding Causes and Consequences.

Outside IMSA, Dr. Eysturlid is an avid cyclist and hiker. He is also a long time Boy Scout (Eagle Scout), and the father of two Eagle Scouts. A longtime advocate for the necessity of Freedom of Expression in academia, he has become involved in the University of Chicago’s efforts to promote it (The Parrhesia Faculty Seminar).
