IMSA Graduate Takes Medical Mission to Mexico

IMSA Class of 2009 graduate Hannah Reiser traveled out of the country for the first time to serve on a medical mission to Mexico and returned with 'so much more.'

IMSA Class of 2009 graduate Hannah Reiser.

Reiser, of Petersburg, Illinois, will be a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame majoring in Pre-medicine with a minor in International Development Studies.  In May, Reiser volunteered for 10 days with Helping Hands Medical Missions (HHMM) in Cotija, Mexico, providing medical assistance to rural areas in developing countries.

"The most valuable lesson I learned was that a patient appreciates the small gestures even if you can't speak their language," Reiser said.  "A nervous patient before surgery responds well to having their hand held no matter what language they speak."

Following her graduation from Notre Dame, Hannah plans to continue her work with those less fortunate.

"I would like to continue with health care in third world countries, whether through missionary work or through other organizations such as Doctors Without Borders."
