IMSA Senior Named Intel Semifinalist

An IMSA senior is among only five from Illinois and 300 in the nation who were named Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) Semifinalists in the Annual Intel Science Talent Search.

Often considered the “junior Nobel Prize,” the Intel STS recognizes the most accomplished students and their schools for excellence in science and mathematics.

IMSA senior Carrie Sha of Plainfield was named a semifinalist based on her research project Development of Novel Sensor to Reduce Postural Kyphosis.  Postural kyphosis, or excessive spinal curvature (sometimes called hunchback) can be caused by poor posture, such as sitting at a desk.  This condition is increasing in adolescents and office workers.  Carrie developed a sensor that alerts the wearer when they are bending their spine, when sitting, too much.  The frequency and amplitude of the buzzer notification increases as bend increases.

IMSA is one of only four schools in Illinois to have Intel semifinalists  this year.  Each semifinalist will receive $1,000 in recognition of their scientific achievements.

For the Intel Science Talent Search, projects were judged on their originality and creative thinking as well as on a broader measure of the students' achievement and leadership, both inside and outside the classroom.

“Each year, the Intel Science Talent Search honors high school seniors poised to lead in U.S. scientific innovation,” said Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation. “This year, these young scientists are tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges in topics ranging from environmental conservation solutions to medical treatments.”

From the 300 Intel semifinalists, 40 finalists will be announced on January 23, 2013.  Those 40 finalists will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. March 7-13 and compete for $630,000 in awards provided by the Intel Foundation.  Winners will be announced at a black-tie gala award ceremony on March 12, 2013 following the five-day Science Talent Institute.
Intel states the Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) is the nation's oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition.  Alumni of STS have made extraordinary contributions to science and hold more than 100 of the world’s most coveted science and math honors, including seven Nobel Prizes and three National Medals of Science.
