The IMSA Scholastic Bowl Team won their third straight IHSA State Championship on Friday, March 15th. The Titans won games against Carbondale, Homewood Flossmoor, and Auburn in order to make it into the finals against Loyola Academy.
According to Head Coach Noah Prince, “the final match was, I am told, the most exhilarating one in Illinois history. IMSA was down 140 in the first half, but fought back to even things up in the third quarter.” IMSA was neck-and-neck against Loyola, which, because of their impressive performances, has become somewhat of a rival for the Titans this year.
Coach Prince continues: “The fourth quarter was back-and-forth, and Loyola got the final toss-up to tie the game at 360. They then got the first of three bonus parts to take a lead, but missed the next two. IMSA recovered both missed parts and won by 10.” Loyola Academy couldn’t answer a question about computational probability, and Anton Karpovich of IMSA was able to recover the “bounce back,” which resulted in a final score of 380-370, with IMSA on top.
“While we’ve won each year I’ve been at IMSA, we never take a championship run for granted,” says Senior Saieesh Rao. “It was a clutch moment for IMSA Quiz Bowl,” adds Junior Siva Gangavarapu.
The winning Titans team features Sabrina Lato (captain), Saieesh Rao, Anton Karpovich, Siva Gangavarapu, Waleed Ali, Lael Costa, Rajiv Patel-O'Connor, Dan Pechi, Molly Fane, and Daniel Collins, and is coached by Noah Prince and Assistant Coach Greg Dzuriscko.
