FUNshops

Upcoming Funshops

Funshops are 2-hour, hands-on, minds-on STEM experiences for students in grades 3-6. They are written by our IMSA curriculum writing team to capture your child’s natural curiosity and mimic the enterprise of doing real science.

More Than Meets the Eye

Aurora – January 11, 2020, 9:30 am – 12:00 noon

Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy, 1500 Sullivan Road, Aurora, IL 60506

Grade 2

The typical human eye can distinguish up to 10 million different shades of color and amazingly every single one of those colors is ultimately created by some combination of the 3 primary colors!  In this FunShop, students will explore the science behind color perception and light and will learn about the difference behind additive and subtractive color mixing as they engineer their own rainbow eyeglasses!

Grades 3-4    PROGRAM NOW FULL – WAITLIST ONLY

How does the human eye see color and light? Join us in a hands-on exploration into the mechanics of light and discover how the eye and brain work together to see the world. Applying what they have learned, young scientists will get to build a kaleidoscope with their own unique design.

Grades 5-6    PROGRAM NOW FULL – WAITLIST ONLY

What is in an eye? Students will explore the visual systems of mammals through the dissection of a cow eye! Identifying various cow-eye structures, they will discover how the cow eye compares to a human eye! By testing their sense of sight, participants will begin to appreciate the little things – in our eye (right down to the little light-detecting cells) – which help us to see the world.

Arcade Engineering

Aurora – February 29, 2020, 9:30 am – 12:00 noon

Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy, 1500 Sullivan Road, Aurora, IL 60506

Grade 3 & 4

Electromagnetism is one of the four fundamental forces of physics in our universe and in this FunShop, our arcade engineers will learn how to harness this force to create arcade games! Students will first explore the nature of magnetic materials via our Ultimate Magnet Olympics! They will then apply this knowledge towards creating irresistible magnetic arcade games that will attract everyone to come play!

Grades 5 & 6

How does engineering and science apply to a simple game of skee-ball? With all the technology taking over the gaming industry, our dedicated Arcade Engineers need to SAVE Skee-ball, a classic and super fun arcade game!! Kids will experience the engineering design process and explore physics principles as they create their own game of skee-ball!! Come have a BALL and put your own SPIN on how the game is built and played!

Grades 7 & 8

Calling all arcade game lovers and enthusiasts! At this FunShop, kids will get to flex their mechanical engineering skills and unleash their creativity by designing, constructing, and testing their very own cardboard pinball machines. Come design, build, play and compete, then take your game home to continue the fun!
