Upcoming Funshops

Statement from 3/23/2020

Due to the current public health crisis, IMSA has cancelled all events through May 31 . For parents who have registered their children for our April events below, we will be processing refunds for you. We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes. Stay well and we hope to see your child at a future IMSA STEM enrichment event.

FUNshops are 2-hour, hands-on, minds-on STEM experiences for students in grades 3-6. They are written by our IMSA curriculum writing team to capture your child’s natural curiosity and mimic the enterprise of doing real science.

Arcade Engineering

Liberty Middle School – April 17, 2020, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

1 District Drive, Edwardsville, IL  62025

Grade 3 & 4

Electromagnetism is one of the four fundamental forces of physics in our universe and in this FunShop, our arcade engineers will learn how to harness this force to create arcade games! Students will first explore the nature of magnetic materials via our Ultimate Magnet Olympics! They will then apply this knowledge towards creating irresistible magnetic arcade games that will attract everyone to come play!

Grades 5 & 6

How does engineering and science apply to a simple game of skee-ball? With all the technology taking over the gaming industry, our dedicated Arcade Engineers need to SAVE Skee-ball, a classic and super fun arcade game!! Kids will experience the engineering design process and explore physics principles as they create their own game of skee-ball!! Come have a BALL and put your own SPIN on how the game is built and played!

Let’s Get Chemical

Grades 3-4 and 5-6
Aurora – April 18, 2020, 9:30 am – 12:00 noon

Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy, 1500 Sullivan Road, Aurora, IL 60506

Grades 3 & 4

Bubble bubble toil and trouble! Chemical reactions are full of fizzing, popping, bubbling and more. Come join us for some soapy fun with, you guessed it, bubbles! And so much more. Our Junior Chemists will see what happens when different sudsy combinations are mixed, and will get to bring home a special concoction of their own.

Grades 5 & 6
What do you do when a group of PhD students are close to getting their degrees but need some extra motivation to help them cross that finish line…?  We “get chemical!” and invite our student participants to help us create some pH boosts for our PhD candidates.  Participants of this workshop will explore the science behind pH – a fundamental measurement used in chemistry which helps chemists predict the behaviors and reactivities of various compounds & solutions – and design and create “pHlowers” to share with friends and family.

Bee Our Guest

Grade 2
Aurora – April 18, 2020, 9:30 am – 12:00 noon
