Students’ Impact in Mental Health

Supporting Tomorrow’s Innovators Today: IMSA’s Blueprint for Student Mental Health

When Illinois invests in IMSA, it invests in the mental, emotional, and economic health of its future. IMSA develops students who are:

  • Academically exceptional
  • Emotionally resilient
  • Strong communicators and collaborators
  • Culturally aware
  • Ready to drive Illinois’ innovation economy

Student Leadership in Action: An IMSA Student Driving Statewide Change

The effectiveness of IMSA’s support systems is most evident in the leadership our students demonstrate beyond campus. A powerful recent example is the legislative advocacy led by an IMSA student: House Bill 2960: Student-Driven Mental Health Education Reform.

Sai Ganbote '26

Featured on WGN News, IMSA senior Sai Ganbote helped to draft and champion HB 2960, a bill requiring comprehensive mental health education in Illinois public schools. Motivated by the experiences of her peers, including the anxiety and academic pressures common in high-achieving environments, Sai recognized an urgent need for systemic change.

The initiative:

  • Provides age-appropriate mental health instruction statewide
  • Ensures student privacy protections
  • Addresses equity by including content relevant to LGBTQ+ youth, Asian American students, and other groups
  • Earned bipartisan support and is now moving through the Illinois General Assembly

This work demonstrates the real-world impact IMSA students achieve when supported academically, socially, and emotionally. Students like Sai, are not just preparing for the future, but are helping shape Illinois’ future right now.
