2016/2017 Accomplishments

  • IMSA's new innovation center, IN2, won the People’s Choice Award at the 16th annual Chicago Innovation Awards. The Chicago Innovation Awards, celebrating its 16th year, is the Chicago region’s foremost recognition of the most innovative new products or services brought to market or to public service each year.
  • IMSA will host the International Student Science Fair June 27-July 1, 2018 marking the first time the event has been held in the United States. 
  • IMSA opened the privately funded IN2 Steve and Jamie Chen Center for Innovation and Inquiry, the first innovation center in a secondary education setting in the state of Illinois. IN2 Steve and Jamie Chen Center for Innovation & Inquiry opened on March 30, 2017 as a model for U.S. education that empowers young people to transform their ideas into reality and solutions to the complex social challenges of our time through entrepreneurship and innovation. IN2 builds Illinois’ STEM pipeline through entrepreneurship training, makerspace education, and innovation programs that connect talented Illinois students with Chicago-area startups, mentors and community partners. The collaborative environment connects education to industry to share opportunities and find solutions, continuing to strengthen Illinois’ STEM innovation pipeline.
  • IMSA has begun a construction project to renovate our 1st floor B-Wing biology laboratories.  This project has an estimated budget of $1,450,000 including equipment, furniture, fixtures, and contingencies.  Renovation consists of upgrades to two classrooms, three laboratories, fume hoods, work benches, flooring and ventilation systems.  The funds for this project were all from private sources and raised from 2015 to 2016.
  • IMSA unveiled its newly renovated science labs that mirror university and industry research spaces.  These facilities allow IMSA’s renowned faculty to develop new teaching methods that enhance the educational experience of the Academy’s residential students and create innovative models for teaching science in a collaborative, inquiry-based way.
  • Student Inquiry and Research (SIR) is an integral part of the academic program that places students with active scientists on projects of mutual interest, enabling students to learn how research is accomplished by carrying out cutting edge research. Scientists include active researchers on the IMSA staff and faculty, researchers at local laboratories, and researchers at universities. IMSA is the only school in the state of Illinois:
    • with an active research staff and research department, similar in form and output to a university research center.
    • with active research collaborations with Indiana University Southeast, Loyola University, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, CERN, and the Morton Arboretum.
  • IMSA students scored an average composite of 32.2 on the ACT compared to the average Illinois college-bound student of 20.9.
  • 84% of IMSA graduating seniors participated in experiential research on campus, at universities or at research institutions.
  • Three IMSA students were among the top 300 finalists for the Regeneron Science Talent Search.
  • Six out of nine Illinois students who were Semi-Finalists for the 2017 Siemens Scholarship competition were from IMSA.  One of these was a finalist at the National level.
  • The IMSA Chess Team won the IHSA State Chess Tournament.
  • The IMSA Scholastic Bowl Team won the IHSA State Scholastic Bowl Tournament.
  • Two IMSA students qualified as semi-finalists in the USA Biology Olympiad Open Exam.
  • IMSA students received national recognition in German, Russian and Chinese language competitions.
  • IMSA students completed over 122,307 hours of volunteer service to organizations throughout the IMSA community and in students’ home communities throughout Illinois.
  • 25% of students in IMSA’s entrepreneurship program went on to launch their own start-up, or join a start-up team.  Over the past five years, IMSA students have provided more than 11,000 hours of internship time to Chicago start-ups.
  • In the workforce, over 6,000 IMSA alumni use their scientific minds to creatively solve global issues and advance the human condition. They are doctors leading breakthroughs in neurological disorders and cancer treatments; scientists at national laboratories; leaders in education at Harvard, MIT, the University of Illinois and other prestigious universities; technology experts at Facebook, Google, BuzzFeed and Microsoft; business leaders and engineers at the Boeing Company, McDonald’s Corporation, Motorola, the New York Stock Exchange, Nissan, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and Shell Oil; investors in tech start-ups and social ventures; and entrepreneurs and co-founders of Netscape, PayPal, OkCupid, Yelp and YouTube.
  • Members of the Academy’s faculty, staff, and founders are models of professional growth and achievement. They include presidential award winners, published authors, and a Nobel Laureate in physics. In academic year 2016-2017, all 53 faculty members had advanced degrees, with 57% holding doctorate degrees; and 25% certified by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), the highest standard for excellence in the teaching profession.
  • IMSA and Flinn Scientific have teamed up to expand access to the award-winning IMSA Fusion program for teachers across the state of Illinois. This collaboration offers a platform to expand IMSA Fusion’s reach as a state leader in STEM education and assists IMSA’s efforts to provide transformational STEM curricula to educators across Illinois.
